Monthly Archives: March 2014

Y’all have no idea how much fun I have compiling each month’s playlist! Here’s my latest just in time for April 1st! (Like… how is it already April?!) There’s an interesting mix of genres on this list as per usual, but I would love to hear your thoughts! (Be sure to scroll down for the full list of songs and if you’re a Spotify user, you can follow the playlist!)

Last weekend my childhood best friend, Lauren, and I traveled to Chicago for for a friend’s wedding. (You might remember my last adventure there…) We spent the first couple of days partaking in all kinds of fun wedding festivities which also included me doing hair and makeup for the bride, her mother, and her sister.

I have always loved Val's (the bride) retro inspired style. She has fantastic taste as you'll see from some of the pictures I snapped from the wedding. I loved the look she wanted for her big day! It doesn't hurt that she is stupid beautiful.

Val's amazing sister Lisa - truly one of the most fun and hilarious people ever! She loves big hair and glam so we really vibed on this! haha

Decided to take a before and after of myself too! I was trying to do a Bridget Bardot thing with some big hair, dark eyes, and pinky peach eyes and lips.

The wedding was at a gorgeous urban loft space called Room 1520 and I loved every detail!

Managed to find a boyfriend in Chicago…

We loved having the chance to stay in Val’s new apartment in Lincoln Park – such a cute neighborhood with tons of great restaurants… EXCEPT FOR HAVING TO HAUL MY GIANT 51 POUND SUITCASE UP AND DOWN 3 FLIGHTS OF STAIRS!!!! No handicap access!? What’s up with that?! #cityliving Check out this video of my troubles:

The next morning we hoofed it (in 25 degree weather!) two fantastic places.

The first was Heritage General Store which doubles as a bike repair store and a coffee shop/cafe. The atmosphere reminded me of something Nashville would have. Cute and cozy with a great variety of coffees and food. We were smitten.

I love this pose apparently.

Couldn’t agree more.

I wanted to order at least 14 of these menu items.

We found out after the fact that Bakin’ and Eggs is BYOB… you can bring your own champagne for mimosas – next time!Processed with VSCOcam with f2 preset

This deliciousness is called Chilaquiles. It consists of baked corn tortillas, sweet onion, tomatillo salsa, Parmesan, eggs your way, and green onion and jalapeno sour cream. I love any type of Mexican brunch item... huevos rancheros is always a go-to for me and I'm going to be researching recipes. This KILLED IT!

Lauren's breakfast which was a brown butter butternut squash frittata with goat cheese. It was killer. She also ordered a side of their mesquite bacon which was fantastic. They actually have a bacon flight on their menu with flavors like honey, smoked cherry, jalapeno, etc.

Promise I asked his permission to take this photo. What is more quintessentially brunch than a bacon flow chart?!

We also enjoyed taking in some of the beauty of the Windy City even though it was miserably cold…

What are y’all’s favorite Chicago hot spots?

As many of you know, I do a lot of work as a makeup artist. I’ve had so much fun working on lots of weddings, events, and photo shoots lately, so I thought I would share some of my recent work with you!

I worked on this beautiful wedding style shoot with the talented Kelly Dellinger Events (Nashville’s best wedding planner, seriously brides.) and Amy Nicole Photo (her images speak for themselves!) that was featured on Ruffled Blog! (To see the whole shoot, click here!) (Could I possibly put more of my thoughts in parenthesis?! Didn’t think so. Get it together Mader.)

I die for this beauty's face. Seriously a stunning girl! I used one of my MAC lipstick favorites, Diva, on her.

How gorgeous are the headpieces we got to use on this shoot? I want one for a night out... Hipster beauty queen to the max! Thinking about doing a hair tutorial on how to do your own 1920's inspired faux bob... any takers out there?

I’ve also had the privilege of meeting, shooting with, and working for Brad Lovell in the past couple of months. I have loved styling the models clothes and hair and makeup! He has shot tons of models and pageant contestants and does a BEAUTIFUL headshot if anyone is needing a new set! He recently relocated from Virginia to Nashville and girls come in from all over the country to shoot with him! He also happens to be one of the sweetest country boys you’ll ever meet! :)

I bet you won't find it hard to believe that at least once a week a boy pulls me aside to talk about how piercing Taryn's eyes are... haha I can't handle how beautiful she is (inside and out - if you missed my post about the cool app she just launched, check it out here!)

Stay tuned – tomorrow’s post will cover a Chicago wedding I just did and I have other shoots to share with you soon!

Just when you think spring has arrived, it snows. (At least in Nashville today…) HOWEVER, that hasn’t stopped me from compiling my list of fashion must-haves for spring 2014.

1.) Distressed denim – Denim is everywhere this spring – the jean jacket is back, they are making acid washed everything, and I love all of the distressed boyfriend jeans, jeggings, and high waisted shorts. Here are a couple pieces I’ll be sporting this spring.

I need these. Get ’em here.

I know some people are gonna hate on these, but I love them. Sorry I’m not sorry. Get your here.

2. Embellished Crop Tops – My friends won’t be surprised to hear this – I’ve been sporting many a crop top for the past several years, but the fancy ones that have been popping up on all of my favorite celebrities have inspired me for spring! My favorites have a loose fit and look awesome with a pencil skirt, or anything high waisted.

I would wear this with high waisted skinny trousers for a fancy night out. Get it here.

This top is a complete lust piece for me at $2185, but if you have to have it, you can get it here.

3.) Sneakers – You saw me sporting a wedge tennis shoe here, and I’m also obsessed with any any all converse!

I definitely need to add a red high top to my collection. :)

I’ll take one in each color please.

4.) Bright manicures – Love this fun way to add a pop of color to your look!

Obsessed with this shade (not sure what it’s called)! (Image from laquerlookbook.com)

OPI’s Toucan Do It If You Try

OPI’s Where Did Suzi’s Man Go

5.) Ankle Strap Heels – Right now I think I love ANY shoe I see right now that has an ankle strap. Loving open toe and pointy toe styles alike!

Just scored this Dolce Vita shoe and have been wearing them at every possible opportunity! The look great with boyfriend jeans, skirts, dresses, rompers, etc.

Love this shoe from ASOS! A pop of neon is another look I’m loving for spring!

What are some of the trends you’re looking forward to wearing this spring?

About a week ago I was fortunate enough to be invited to a brunch hosted by Lululemon Green Hills and Miriam Designs. The brunch had all of my favorite components: inspiring conversation, delicious vegan gluten free cuisine (courtesy of The Free Bakery and Backyard to Ballroom – check them out!), tons of freebees, and a beautiful aesthetic.

The talented Daniel C. White was on hand to capture some beautiful images.

Brunch was held in the beautiful Miriam Designs showroom which is inside a huge warehouse that is affectionately called the hipster's frathouse - love that, duh.

Vegan Gluten Free Donuts from The Free Bakery. Flavors like chocolate rum, banana chocolate chip with coconut, etc. They tasted like heaven.

Instantly connected with Larz from www.livinlikelarz.com – a 19 year old fashion and travel maven who is wise beyond her years and so much fun. She also volunteers with the Children’s Hospital and is working on a project to make children’s hospital uniforms more fun and fashionable. Just one of many girl crushes from the day.

I love everything about Lululemon’s aesthetic, but what I didn’t know until the brunch is how much I love them as a company. Lululemon’s mission is to elevate the world from mediocrity to greatness. They require their employees to have a clear vision for themselves for the next 10 years written down. Y’all might recall this post at the end of 2013 where I talked about how important writing goals down is. They also stress how important setting big goals is. It really resonated with me when they said you should be failing at over 50% of your goals – if you’re not, then your goals aren’t big enough. Food for thought! We did a little exercise in vision, and if you’re gonna preach it, you better do it yourself, right? Here’s mine!:
aThe brunch was filled with girl-crush worthy women. I loved how this event brought so many powerful, creative, and ambitious ladies together to encourage and support each other. I am currently obsessing over several of their blogs and stylish Instagram accounts. One of my favorites was Ciona Rouse who wrote the following poem (which ended up being used by Lululemon!):

What if we all had the courage to live this way every single day?

untitled-145

So ridiculous I had to post… haha I wish I remembered what was so funny! Fair to say I enjoyed myself!

untitled-141

All of the beautiful ladies!

untitled-114

Another great expression caught on camera. Like… what is that? haha

Prior to the brunch, the ladies at Lululemon Green Hills had invited me to their store to pick out a couple of pieces to style and wear to the brunch. I’ve been a rabid Lululemon fan for years, so I was practically frothing at the mouth to choose my pieces. The beauty of Lululemon is how versatile it is, the clothes are so comfortable and flattering for your workout, but also look great worn with everyday pieces too! Comfort and style are what I’m all about!
untitled-104(1)I chose the Bring Back the Track Pant in cadet blue. This pant is incredibly light weight and has a lot of stretch. I’ll be hiking Percy Warner in these all spring… and wearing them all over town. I’ve already received a ton of compliments on these babies. I also got the After Asana Pullover in heathered medium grey. My favorite part about this pullover is the kangaroo pocket in the front – I love having an easy-to-reach place to keep my keys and phone and I LOVE the fun pop of color inside the pocket.
untitled-93(1)

I styled this look with one of my favorite necklaces from a local designer, Sleeveless. The necklace is called the Caesar and you’ve probably seen me wearing it everywhere from at Miss USA to with my Lululemon! I also love to mix prints, so I carried a J. Crew leopard clutch and paired it with some camouflage wedge tennis shoes. (Thanks for letting me steal those for the day Jessica!) I polished my look off with some beachy/Victoria’s Secret/mermaid waves and a bold red lip (Symphony No. 1) from Therapy Systems.
